What to Wear Over Your Swimsuit on a Boat Day

Navy Stripe towel wrap skirt on a boat

A day on the boat asks a lot of what you wear. You are wet, then dry, then wet again. You are climbing on and off at the sandbar, sitting on damp cushions, and probably stopping somewhere for lunch on the way home. The right cover-up handles all of it without a second thought.

Here is what to look for, from a brand born on the water in Charleston.

1. Something that handles being wet

Most cover-ups are built for looking nice by the pool, not for coming out of the water. Thin fabrics cling, and anything that is not absorbent just stays damp. Terry cloth works the other way: it soaks up water on contact, so it dries you off while you wear it.

2. Easy on, easy off

On a boat you are changing constantly, often in a tight space with nowhere to sit down. Buttons, zippers and anything you have to pull over your head get old fast. A wrap that ties at the waist goes on in seconds and adjusts as you go.

3. A pocket

This one gets overlooked. Your phone, keys, sunglasses and lip balm all need somewhere to go, and a bag on a moving boat is one more thing to keep track of. A pocket keeps the small stuff with you.

4. Coverage that moves with you

You will be stepping over the side, climbing ladders and sitting on the bow. Look for a length that covers what you want covered while you do all of that, and a fit you can loosen or tighten through the day.

5. Something you can wear to lunch

Boat days rarely end at the dock. If your cover-up can go straight from the water to a dockside table, you packed well.

Why we made the Sullivan

We could not find a cover-up that did all five, so we made one. The Sullivan is a towel wrap skirt in 100% cotton terry. It dries you off as you wear it, ties on in seconds, has a side pocket sized for your phone, keys and sunglasses, and comes in two size ranges, S/M and M/L. It is machine washable, which matters after a day of salt and sunscreen.

New to it? The how to tie guide takes about thirty seconds, and the size guide has full measurements.
